What is a filling?
A dental filling is a type of restoration that our dentist may recommend if a tooth suffers from minor to moderate decay or damage. When the damage is not extensive enough to warrant the use of a dental crown, Dr. Derek Lowe may suggest a dental filling in Fairbanks, Alaska, to restore the tooth’s structure and health. After the decay is removed from the tooth and the tooth is thoroughly cleaned, the filling material is placed directly onto the tooth’s surface, filling in the space left by the decay. The filling material is soft when first placed, allowing us to shape it to fit the tooth. The dental filling is then hardened and checked to make sure it fits your bite. We can typically complete a filling in only one pleasant visit to Alaska Dental Arts.
What types of fillings are available?
We offer two main kinds of dental fillings at our office. The first is called a white filling and is made from a material called composite resin, which can be matched in color to your natural tooth shade. The second kind of filling is known as an amalgam filling, and it is silver in color. Our knowledgeable dentist and dental team will discuss your preferences and needs with you to make certain you get the kind of filling that best suits your smile.
