What is a bridge?
A bridge is a kind of fixed (non-removable) dental restoration that can be used to restore your smile after tooth loss. Unlike complete and partial dentures, which can be removed regularly for cleaning, a dental bridge is anchored in place and can only be removed by your dentist. The dental bridge is made up of two dental crowns and one or more artificial teeth. Dr. Derek Lowe places the crowns on dental implants or the adjacent natural teeth, called abutment teeth. This ensures that the bridge is stable and will not easily shift or come loose. The crowns support the pontic, or artificial tooth. Dental bridges are custom made to look like your natural teeth; no one will be able to tell that you were missing a tooth!
Do I need a bridge?
Bridges have several benefits. A dental bridge in Fairbanks, Alaska, can improve your smile by:
- Restoring the lost shape and volume of your face
- Alleviating stress on the bite
- Improving your ability to speak, chew, and eat as normal
- Enhancing the appearance of your smile
- Preventing the natural teeth from shifting position
